is modular, scalable, based on open standards
and is both platform and database independent.
This mitigates against vendor lock-in. The Miles
technology platform and architecture provides
a solid and reliable structure for the deployment
of future-proof solutions.
Applications in SOA
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) models the
enterprise as a collection of self-contained
services that perform specific functions available
across the enterprise and to business partners
over the internet.
In the SOA paradigm an application is not a
monolithic software package. It is a collection
of services assembled together from previous
developments. Or even from previous applications
that have been made SOA-ready by adding a façade.

- Business Services: application-level
functions that relate to a specific business
task
- Business-Neutral Services: application-level
functions that are applicable across business
applications, e.g. relationship management,
accounting, etc.
- Infrastructure Services: security, monitoring,
data logging, administrative functions, exception
handling, etc.
Web Services
Web Services offer the best solution to implement
on SOA in a platform-independent way. Based
on XML and independent from all programming
languages, Web Services are compatible with
a number of platforms, including JEE and .NET.
The Miles application is a collection of interoperating
Web Services.
