Sofico's 20th Anniversary Dinner Party on 5 November 2008

In celebration of Sofico’s 20th anniversary, we invited our customers and business partners to a medieval Dinner Party in the Cloth Hall (Lakenhalle), which adjoins the richly ornate Gothic Belfry tower in the heart of Ghent.

We would very much like to thank all attendants for their presence. We hope to have provided you with a pleasant and memorable ‘medieval’ evening.

Prior to the medieval event, our guests had the possibility to visit the famous Ghent Count’s Castle (Gravensteen). Built in 1180, this castle served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders. From the 14th century onwards, it was used as a courthouse and a prison.
After the visit of this must-see attraction, a guided walk took our guests on a discovery of the city of Ghent back to the Belfry tower.
The Belfry of Ghent is one of the three medieval towers that overlook the old city centre.
Throughout the centuries, it has served not only as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower and town treasury.
In the Middle Ages, Ghent was one of the most important places for the trade of wool and cloth.
Inside the Cloth Hall, the textiles were officially inspected and measured by three ‘inspectors of the hall’ (halleheren) and transactions were negotiated.
The construction of the hall started in 1425 and ended 20 years later, as the cloth industry lost importance. From 1613 onwards, the incomplete cloth hall started to draw new occupants, including a militia guild and a fencing school. From 1742 to 1902, the crypt served as the town jail.
